It's that time of year where the temps are dropping and the days are getting shorter! Along with switching over our wardrobe's we also need to think about changing up our skincare routines.
With colder weather, you may notice your skin looking a bit dull and dry. This is due to in-door heating and lack of vitamin D. The good news is that you don’t need to overhaul your entire skincare routine, but a few tweaks will help keep your skin looking glowy and fresh when transitioning into cooler seasons.
Here are a few skincare tips to help you perfect your regime for the Fall and Winter months.
My number one suggestion is to invest in a facial steamer!
I use Dr. Dennis Gross Pro Facial Steamer, which is a brand I have often talked about in my blog. This facial steamer is small and lightweight so you can store it easily.
Due to the cold & windy air outside and pumping up the heat inside, our skin cells dry out a lot faster. With a facial steamer, your skin will be primed for exfoliation and your products will absorb into your skin for better performance. If you’re going to add anything in your routine this is my top suggestion!
How to Use:
This steamer only takes about nine minutes to use and once or twice a week is all you need. After steaming use a skin mask or your favorite moisturizer to really keep your skin hydrated and glowing.
So why is an exfoliator a must, especially in the winter, for your skin? Skin becomes dry and flakey. So to gently rid your skin of dry, flaky surface cells you need to exfoliate to allow the rest of your products to work their best.
Since I have extremely sensitive skin I’m very careful with exfoliators. I have used Clarins One-Step Gentle Exfoliating Cleanser for several years and it has never been too abrasive and leaves my skin feeling incredibly soft. It’s gentle enough to use every day, but I wouldn't suggest keeping it in your daily routine. Twice or three times a week should be enough if your skin is really dried out. The orange scent is so good and it’s dermatologist tested.
How to Use:
After washing your face in the evening, exfoliating will rid your skin of any excess buildup you've accumulated throughout the day, allowing your other products to work even better. You can also use it in the morning too if that works better with your lifestyle. Just make sure you keep all exfoliators away from your eye area.
#3 Sheet Masks
There are so many sheet masks on the market today. I’m going to list a couple of the masks that I use on a consistent basis. What I look for in a sheet mask is to give me extra hydration. Looking at myself in the mirror and saying “Hello Clarice” in a creepy voice is just an added bonus!
All of these masks are great to help boost hydration and give you that “spa day” feeling. My favorite is the Charlotte Tilbury dry mask. It leaves your skin so soft, plus each mask is re-usable up to 3 times. Remember, if you have a facial steamer use that first before using any mask to open up your pores and allow that extra hydration to soak in.
Here are my favorite Sheet Masks:
Again, there is so many rinse off masks but the FARMACY - Honey Potion Renewing Antioxidant Hydration Mask is one I use most often. It’s a warming face mask (feels so good in the winter) made with an intensely moisturizing combination of honey and royal jelly.
The products in this mask are potent and a natural antioxidant that enhances hydrations along with the purifying benefits of honey. This is a product that is not tested on animals and is formulated with naturally derived ingredients. It has earned the “Clean At Sephora” label.
How to Use:
Use this mask in the evening after cleansing your face. Scoop a generous amount of the product with the spatula that is included and spread a thick layer across your face and neck, avoiding your eye and lip area. Massage into your skin for about 2 minutes, and the mask will begin to warm and turn into a creamy texture. Leave it on for 10 to 15 minutes, then just rinse off. Follow with a great moisturizer. Just like that, happy skin!
The Glow Recipe Watermelon Mask is an excellent overnight mask that smells like watermelon and is formulated with hyaluronic acid, an ingredient that I love to have in my skincare routine. It’s suitable for all skin types.
This is an overnight mask, meaning you’ll sleep in it. But not to worry, it’s very breathable so does not feel heavy on your skin. Also, it is a transfer-proof, pillow-proof formula, so no mess on your sheets or pillows.
How to Use:
Use 2 scoops of the product, pat into the skin, don’t rub, until it is fully absorbed into the skin. Rinse off in the morning. The mask will work while you sleep to help with rough, dull skin. You’ll wake up with a beautifully hydrated complexion. It doesn’t get easier than that!
Every now and then your skin may need extra care during the winter. First Aid Beauty Ultra Repair Cream is made to provide instant relief and hydration for damaged skin. This is a whipped cream which means it is much easier to use and will absorb into the skin quickly without that greasy feeling. Great for sensitive skin. Works on your body too. Super good for dry elbows and hands. I keep this in stock all winter long, the 6oz. jar last for quite some time. This will work for everyone in the family even the kiddies!

Welcome to the Mrs. Stafford Community where no topic is off limits! I want this blog to be a forum for women my age to be able to discuss everything beauty and fashion, as well as the more sensitive subjects such as menopause and healthy aging. I’m starting my sixties and I feel the best I have in years, and I want to help other women feel the same way. As a community, I think we can come together and start the conversation. This is all about women supporting other women, and trying to have some fun in the meantime.
Attention Ladies: We’d love to hear from you! Your questions are driving the discussions. Don’t hesitate to comment, especially on the “Real Talk” series as well as “Glowing with Mrs. Stafford”. Without you there is no discussion, so don’t be shy!
