So here we are in November with colder temps and sundown around 4:30 PM knowing that winter is right around the corner. Along with changing our wardrobe we also need to change our skin care. With colder temps not only can you skin look dull but it can also be so dry that it can become painful and sore. You don’t need to overhaul your entire routine but a few tweaks will help when the temps start to drop.
Here are a few suggestions that I do when Fall and Winter are starting.
Invest in a facial steamer. The one I use is from Dr. Dennis Gross Skincare. It’s small and lightweight so you can store it easily and it can be packed if you're traveling to a colder climate. Because of cold air outside and dryness inside due to heating, our skin cells dry out faster. With steaming, your skin will be primed for exfoliation and your products will absorb into your skin for better performance. This steamer only takes about nine minutes to use and once or twice a week is all you need. After steaming use a skin mask or your favorite moisturizer to really make your skin hydrated and glowing. If you’re going to change anything in your routine this is what I suggest you do.
So why is an exfoliator a must, especially in the winter, for your skin? Skin becomes dry and flakey due to the cold and also because of heating in your home. So to gently rid your skin of dry, flaky surface cells you need to exfoliate to bring that glow back to your skin. Because I have extremely sensitive skin I’m very careful with exfoliators. I have used Clarins for many years and it has never been too abrasive and leaves my skin feeling incredibly soft. It’s gentle enough to use every day. After washing your face in the evening, exfoliating will rid your skin of any excess makeup, making your other products work even better. You can also use in the morning too. The orange scent is so good and it’s dermatologist tested. Just make sure you keep all exfoliators away from your eye area.
#3 Sheet Masks
There are so many sheet masks on the market today. I’m going to list a couple of the masks that I use on a consistent basis. What I look for in this type of mask is extra hydration. Looking at myself in the mirror and saying “Hello Clarice” in a creepy voice is just an added bonus! All of these masks are great to help boost hydration and give you that “spa day” feeling. My favorite is the Charlotte Tilbury dry mask. It leaves your skin so glowing and soft and each mask is re-usable up to 3 times. Remember, if you have a facial steamer use that first before your mask to get that extra hydration and super glowing skin.
Here are my favorites:
Again, there are so many rinse off masks but this is one I use most often. It’s a warming face mask (feels so good in the winter) made with an intensely moisturizing combination of honey and royal jelly. Products in the mask are a potent, natural antioxidant that enhances hydrations along with the purifying benefits of honey. This is a product that is not tested on animals and is formulated with naturally derived ingredients. It has earned the “Clean At Sephora” label. Use in the evening after washing your face. Scoop a generous amount of the product with the spatula that is included and spread a thick layer across your face and neck, avoiding your eye and lip area. Massage into your skin for about 2 minutes, and the mask will begin to warm and turn into a creamy texture. Leave it on for 10 to 15 minutes, then just rinse off. Follow with a great moisturizer. Just like that, happy skin!
The Glow Recipe Watermelon Mask is an excellent overnight mask that smells like watermelon and is formulated with hyaluronic acid, an ingredient that I love in my skin care routine. It’s suitable for all skin types. This is an overnight mask, meaning you’ll sleep in it. But not to worry, it’s very breathable so does not feel heavy on your skin. Also, it is a transfer-proof, pillow-proof formula, so no mess on your sheets or pillows. Use 2 scoops of the product, pat into the skin, don’t rub, until it is fully absorbed into the skin. Rinse off in the morning. The mask will work while you sleep to help with rough, dull skin. You’ll wake up with a beautifully hydrated complexion. It doesn’t get easier than that!
Every now and then your skin may need extra care during the winter. First Aid Beauty Ultra Repair Cream is made to provide instant relief and hydration for damaged skin. This is a whipped cream which means it is much easier to use and will absorb into the skin quickly without that greasy feeling. Great for sensitive skin. Works on your body too. Super good for dry elbows and hands. I keep this in stock all winter long, the 6oz. jar last for quite some time. This will work for everyone in the family even the kiddies!
