Glowing with Mrs. Stafford Skincare Advice Column
Glowing with Mrs. Stafford
Attention Ladies: We’d love to hear from you! Your questions are driving the discussions on this blog. Don’t hesitate to comment, especially on the “Real Talk” series as well as “Glowing with Mrs. Stafford”. Without you there is no conversation, so don’t be shy! Also, make sure to read to the end of this post to learn how to enter this month Glowing with Mrs. Stafford Giveaway:)

GLOWING WITH MRS. STAFFORD ADVICE COLUMN:

Q:
“How do I get rid of the tiny white bumps under my eyes?” - Rebecca Bishop
A:
This particular question was asked by quite a few people. I also have these tiny white bumps, normally on the side of my nose or near the eye area.

I thought I would go straight to my professional source, Dr. Katherine Lane of Ophthalmic Consultants, here in South Burlington, Vermont. Dr. Lane is a Cosmetic, Oculofacial Plastic & Reconstructive surgeon, who also does my injectables.

If you would like to find out more information about injections such as botox and fillers you can check out my video “Watch Me Get Botox! Plus Q&A with Dr. Lane” on my youtube channel.

According to Dr. Lane:

These tiny white bumps are called Milia.

What are Milia?

Milia are small, pearly-white, or yellowish cysts that can occur on your face (including on your eyelids and under your eyes).

They occur when dead skin cells get trapped under the surface of the skin, forming a raised white bump, looking similar to a whitehead.

Why this happens is not completely understood, although sun damage is a risk factor. Sun will make the skin rough, which in turn makes it more difficult for the dead skin cells to rise to the surface and be shed normally. There is probably some genetic predisposition as well.

Treatment:

Milia will often disappear without treatment. Milia that are bothersome to a patient can be drained easily in your doctor’s office; other options include chemical peels.

Regular exfoliation can improve skin turnover and resolve milia and prevent recurrences. Additionally, home glycolic peels are safe to try. But if it is close to the eye region I wouldn’t suggest using a face peel.

Retin-A products increase the skin turnover rate, as well. This is why it also helps with skin texture and dark spots. When using Retin-A near the eye, it should be a low concentration, and moisturizers should be used to combat associated skin dryness.

Prevention:

First and foremost, sun protection!! You should be wearing sunscreen every day, even if you are wearing a full face of makeup. I know some makeup products claim to have a certain amount of SPF, but to guarantee full protection you would have to use a lot more of the makeup product than you would typically use.

Now, as for the treatment products I mentioned above, there is a number you can purchase to achieve all of these results. Many of them I have talked about in previous blog posts and use daily, or at least keep in the rotation of my skincare routine.

You can also ask your doctor for prescription-strength Retin-A, which I also use but much less frequently. Prescription-strength Retin-A can have a drying effect on the skin and should be used sparingly and followed by a hydrating moisturizer.

Below I will list some of the top products that I use to help with skin cell turnover and keep my skin looking healthy and smooth.
1. Exfoliation/Peels
  • Right now I am using GOOPGLOW Microderm Instant Glow Exfoliator.
    $$$125

I find this exfoliator to be very mild on the skin but does a beautiful job keeping the texture of my skin soft and smooth. As I’ve mentioned in previous posts, I have extremely sensitive skin, but I can use this product every day. I use the GOOPGLOW Microderm Instant Glow Exfoliator in the mornings while in the shower.

  • I have several glycolic peels that I use. Number one on my list is the Dr. Dennis Gross Universal Daily Peel which was our previous Glowing with Mrs. Stafford Giveaway for May/June.
    $$88
This product works beautifully and comes in three different strengths. The different strengths allow you to use it if you are a first-time user of a face peel. You don’t want to start with the strongest possible peel just in case your skin does have a reaction. I would suggest patch testing any peel on a small area of skin first.

  • A new brand that I have been adding into my routine is HERBIVORE Prism 20% AHA + 5% BHA Exfoliating Glow Facial.
    $$58
This is a jelly-like textured 20% AHA (Alpha Hydroxy Acid) and 5% BHA (Beta Hydroxy Acid) exfoliating peel. Strong ingredients that do the job, this peel only takes up to 20 minutes. If you have more sensitive skin 10 minutes would be best to start. Apply a thin layer, rinse off with warm water then apply a moisturizer or face oil. You will feel a slight tingle, which is normal when using a product that contacts AHA or BHA.

This is a brand that specializes in “clean” makeup. This is a company that does not add “fillers” to their products, so they are all active ingredients there for a reason and doing a specific job. Along with making sure their products are natural and good for your skin they also don’t forget the indulging factor that we love in skincare. They are beautifully packaged and smell incredible.

  • TheHERBIVORE Prism 12% AHA + 3% BHA Exfoliating Glow Serum is another great product from this company with smaller amounts of AHA and BHA that can be used as a leave-on treatment in the evening.
    $$54
***Disclaimer:

Many people asked whether these peels will leave the skin “peeling”. The simple answer is no they will not.

I think a lot of people are getting this confused with a chemical peel or laser treatment, which typically does leave the skin peeling. This does make sense, anything strong enough to make your skin peel like that should be conducted in a professional doctor's office.

These at-home peels will not have that effect. What you may experience is a tingling feeling on the skin after applying, which is normal. You also may see flaking skin, depending on your skin’s texture after using an at-home peel or exfoliator. That is all pretty normal, and a hydrating moisturizer or face oil is always a good idea after exfoliating.

When receiving either a chemical peel, laser treatment, or even doing an at-home peel (such as the ones listed above) you should be extra careful at least two weeks after in the sun. Always wear sunscreen, and even add a hat when going on any outings. If at all possible avoid direct sunlight for two weeks. During this time your skin is brand new, and if you get any sun it will damage that new layer of skin much faster.
2. Retin-A Products
The market is swamped with products that include Retin-A as an ingredient, and you’ve probably been seeing it more and more frequently. The reason why is because it works at reversing skin damage when many products are only preventative. This is one ingredient that should be in everyone’s skincare routine in some form. Now for me, the prescription-strength can be a bit harsh, I only use it now and then when I feel I need to up my game.

The products listed below I keep in my skincare regime continuously and switch up when I feel I need a change.

Retinol Creams:
  • DRUNK ELEPHANT - A-Passioni™ Retinol Cream
$$74
  • SHANI DARDEN SKIN CARE - Retinol Reform
    $$88

Face Masks with Retinol:
Another great way to add Retinol to your skincare routine is with a face mask. If using as an overnight mask, you will only need a small amount, patted into the skin, and washed off in the morning. If using as a wash-off mask, a thicker amount is needed leaving it on for 10 minutes and rinsing off.

  • One of my top favorites is by GLOW RECIPE Avocado Melt Retinol Sleeping Face Mask, which is another clean beauty company. You can use this as an overnight mask or a wash-off mask. I love using it as an overnight mask.
    $49

Retinol Eye Cream:
  • Glow Recipe Avocado Melt Retinol Eye Sleeping Mask is another great product. When using this you do not need to add an eye cream to your routine. Again, this can be used as an overnight eye mask or a daytime eye treatment.
    $42
  • A retinol eye cream that is very gentle is the FAB Skin Lab Retinol Eye Cream. This can be used on the entire orbital area and does a great job in helping with fine lines and wrinkles, leaving that delicate skin under the eye smoother and helping to reduce puffiness.
    $42
3. Sunscreen
Sunscreen is an absolute must if you are using any of the products I have mentioned in this article. Well, it is an absolute must in general! Even if you are a teenager or in your 20's getting into the habit of wearing sunscreen every day will save your skin from so much sun damage. You will thank yourself later believe me!

With all the products mentioned here, you are trying to create skin cell turnover. That means beautiful, fresh looking skin. Having that “new” layer of skin, you need to protect it from sun damage as I have stressed earlier in this article.

Here are a few SPF’s I suggest using:
  • SUPERGOOP! is a brand that I use whenever I’m in the sun. They have a wide range of products for the face, body, and under-eye area.
They have a new product called SUPERGOOP! Bright-Eyed 100% Mineral Eye Cream SPF 40. I love this product and use it under my makeup. Just a little bit is enough, and your eyes do look much brighter.
$36
  • Another sunscreen brand that covers the entire body and face isCoola Classic Body Organic Sunscreen Spray SPF 50 Fragrance-Free. This brand is 70% organic, cruelty-free, and most importantly, reef-friendly. When we vacation in St. John it is required that you use a sunscreen that protects the reef.
    $25
The Coola Sunscreen Spray is for your whole body and is SPF 50, as well as water and sweat resistant. Along with the ease of using a spray, I find this to be one of my favorites. Did I mention that it also hydrates and nourishes the skin with natural ingredients, and it’s affordable? You can’t ask for much more!
  • For my face I use COOLA Classic Face Sunscreen SPF 50 White Tea.
    $32
This is an organic, 50 SPF sunscreen that is light and non-greasy for the face. You can wear this all day without that “sunscreen” feeling on your face. This sunscreen is also water-resistant for up to 80 minutes.

I hope this helps answer some questions, and gives you a place to start!

HOW TO PARTICIPATE IN GLOWING WITH MRS. STAFFORD ADVICE COLUMN:

Ask your questions in the comment section below for a chance to be featured in the next Glowing with Mrs. Stafford Advice Column. I will answer one question in detail bi-monthly and make sure to do all my research to give the most informed answer I can provide!

Since I started this blog I have received many compliments and questions on my skincare routine. Women have asked, “what is my secret” and honestly, it’s a combination of multiple things. I use many different products and tend to switch up my routine often. Staying out of the sun, and wearing sunscreen is a huge one. Finally, I have not been shy about the fact that I get Botox and filler. I even made a video of myself getting Botox injected, which you can find on my Youtube channel. I have written some blog posts about the beauty products I use and routines based on the season or specific skin problems.

Glowing with Mrs. Stafford is my take on an advice column based around skincare. Each person has unique skin and their own issues they would like answers. Glowing with Mrs. Stafford is my idea of how to share my knowledge on this topic.

This is a place where all of you can ask questions about your skin issues. Ask me about certain beauty products you might want to try, or even about treatments such as lasers or Botox since I’ve done it all!

All and any questions are welcome (concerning these topics).

GLOWING WITH MRS. STAFFORD ADVICE COLUMN:

Q:
"I would love to try this (The Tata Harper Giveaway from last months Column). I am 56 years young and I have spent the last 20 years taking care of everyone else but me and it is definitely showing now. I am struggling with all the different products out there and how to use them correctly for the best results. I would love to have a consistent skincare routine but I am at a loss as how to start and which products to use. You are beautiful and I would appreciate any advice on where to start."  ~ Cory
A:
Hi Cory! Thanks so much for the great question. I think this is something most of us women are going through today. We do tend to take care of everyone else first and at times put ourselves last. As we mature, our skin changes, and sometimes it feels like overnight.

I follow a morning and night skin care routine. Some ingredients and products work best at night, while your skin renews itself. Also, some ingredients are not meant to be exposed to the sun, so it’s important to know when and in what order to use your products.

Certain ingredients are a must to make sure we achieve that glowing skin that we are all after. In my experience, Retinol, Vitamin C and Hyaluronic Acid are ingredients that will help your skin achieve that goal.

So here are my recommendations for a simple skin care routine:
Step #1 - Face Wash (Can be used A.M. or P.M.)

I have been using the Drunk Elephant Slaai Makeup Melting Butter, $34.00, 3.88 oz. for about 6 months now, and I’m crazy about it. First, it is a cleansing balm that removes makeup, sunscreen and even water-proof mascara in one easy step. It transforms from oil to milk to cleanse and moisturize, leaving your skin feeling amazing.

It also comes with an exfoliant which they call Bamboo Booster. This product is mixed with the cleanser once a week to gently exfoliate away dry skin. Just do not use this on the eye area. I will use the exfoliating product in the morning, making sure to stay away from the eye area. If you are exfoliating with any product, do not use retinol in conjunction with exfoliating. This would be too much for your skin to handle.

Use on dry skin, morning and night. It comes with a small scoop, so you only need a little to clean your whole face and neck. Add water to activate, rinse with warm water and pat dry. This product will last at least 3 months, so I see this as being very affordable.

Step #2 - Serum (Can be used A.M. or P.M.)

Here’s where things get complex. There are so many serums out there that it's hard to know which type is best for you. What I have found is that a Hyaluronic Acid serum and a Vitamin C serum are a must.

Hyaluronic Acid holds moisture in the skin. This is super important since as we age, we lose moisture, hence fine lines and wrinkles show up. This acid is also something that the body produces normally but produces less as we age. It’s fantastic under makeup and helps give you that plump, soft skin that we’re trying to achieve.

One of the Hyaluronic Acid treatments that I have been using consistently and I feel is the most affordable is the Drunk Elephant B-Hydra Intensive Hydration Serum, $48.00, 1.69 oz.

You might be thinking, “Is this post just about Drunk Elephant products?” No, it is not, but I have to say I truly love their products and use them every day. I’ve written about this product in almost every post on skincare because I think it’s that good.

Apply in the morning and/or night on clean, exfoliated skin. Let it sink in and continue on with your next product.
Bonus Tip: I keep this in the refrigerator so when I apply it feels nice and cool on my skin!
I have two Vitamin C serums that I use consistently, and you guessed it, one is from Drunk Elephant. I swear, I’m not sponsored by them - I just really love their products. It’s the Drunk Elephant C-Firma Vitamin C Day Serum, $80.00, 1oz.

The other is the Summer Fridays CC Me Vitamin C Serum, $64.00, 1 oz.
What a Vitamin C serum does is firms and brightens your skin’s appearance. This is where the “Glow” starts happening. It works to even out your skin’s texture and helps with dullness. It will help achieve brighter skin and work on reducing dark spots and hyperpigmentation.

The other reason I am such a fan of Vitamin C is that it can be used with Hyaluronic Acid safely and is wonderful for your skin when combined.

You will only need one or two pumps, depending on if you are using alone or in combination with Hyaluronic Acid. Yes, these products can be pricey, but you are only using a small amount. This should last you for at least 3 months.

Make sure to keep Vitamin C serum away from your eyes.
Bonus Tip: I also keep this in the refrigerator so when I apply it feels nice and cool on my skin.
Step #3 - Retinols (P.M. ONLY)

You’ve heard about retinol and what a miracle it is for skin. All of that is true, but there are so many products in this category and they can range in their effectiveness along with your skin’s ability to handle them.

You need a retinol in your skin care routine for so many reasons. Retinols help with sun damage, uneven skin tone, fine lines and wrinkles, and helps keep your skin clear.

When using a retinol I suggest starting slowly. Let your skin get used to the product and then you can change as your skin begins to adjust. To start with a medical grade retinol can be a bit harsh for many skin types, so work your way in easy with this ingredient.

The product that I recommend to everyone, no matter their age is, is sold on Amazon exclusively. It is so gentle but really does show results and best of all, it is incredibly affordable. It’s the LilyAna Naturals Retinol Cream, $19.99, 1.7 oz.

I suggest using this product 2 times per week to start. Again, only use it in the evening. If your skin deals well you can increase usage, but I would suggest not using over 4 times per week.

Step #4 - Moisturizer (A.M. and P.M.)

There are hundreds of moisturizers on the market. They range in price, effectiveness and ingredients. I am going to give you two that I use consistently - one luxury priced the other more affordable. I have included these in posts previously because they work.

First Aid Beauty Ultra Repair Cream Intense Hydration, $34.00, 6 oz.

Love this cream! I’ve used it for years, and since I live in Vermont, having red, dry skin is just a given. This cream is ultra absorbing and is wonderful for all skin types. My skin is very sensitive and I tend to get very red, especially on my cheeks, and this cream helps to calm my skin.

Since it is whipped, making it lighter, you can use a small amount as your last step before applying your makeup in the morning.

LaMer Creme de la Mer Moisturizer, $180.00, 1 oz.

Yes, it is crazy expensive and yes, it is amazing. This is the top of the line when it comes to skin care. This is their richer cream, they also have a lighter formula that works very well too and is better for under makeup.

Just a small amount is used (thank God!) by warming it in your hands and then pressing on to your skin. The “Miracle Broth” ingredient is just that, a miracle, and most people will see results immediately. It’s super soothing to your skin and helps with dryness, redness and fine lines and wrinkles.

Ok that’s it as far as the face is concerned. The only other step is an eye cream, but I think I’ll get into that on another post since there are so many options and price points.

I hope this helps answer some questions, and gives you a place to start!

MAY 2020 GIVEAWAY - DR. DENNIS GROSS SKINCARE Alpha Beta® Universal Daily Peel

DR. DENNIS GROSS SKINCARE Alpha Beta® Universal Daily Peel
DR. DENNIS GROSS SKINCARE Alpha Beta® Universal Daily Peel
This is the product that I have been using for years. It was recommended to me when I was going through skincare issues during menopause. It is a 2-Step Peel. Both steps have a wipe that is formulated with the ingredients. They are easy to use, with Step-1 and Step-2 clearly marked on the package.

What I also love about this product is that there are three different strength peels. There’s the Alpha-Beta Universal Daily Peel (the one I use now), the Alpha-Beta Ultra Gentle Daily Peel for Sensitive Skin (the one I started with), and the Alpha-Beta Extra Strength Daily Peel. The last one I have not yet used.

As you can see by the names, you could use these daily. I only use them 2 to 3 times per week at the most. First-time users of peels should start with just once or twice a week. You should test for yourself what would work on your skin. Don’t forget to patch test first!

How to use and ingredients for the Universal Daily Peel:
Ingredients: The first step has AHA’s (Alpha Hydroxy Acids) and BHA’s (Beta Hydroxy/Salicylic Acid) that gently exfoliate your skin, refine pores, and help with natural cell renewal.

HOW TO USE:
  1. Unfold the wipe and use it all over your face (stay clear of your eye area), neck and chest area.
  2. There is a good amount of product in these little wipes, so use it up until it is dry.
  3. I also use them on the back of my hands when there is still a little product left.
  4. Wait 2 minutes to apply the second pad.
  5. Step 2 has retinol and resveratrol for anti-aging benefits and helps to hydrate and smooth skin for a glowing complexion.
  6. Again, unfold the pad and apply the same as the first peel.

This is a special value offer with 60 treatments available, so it should last you awhile! This is a limited time offer but you can win it by entering the Glowing with Mrs. Stafford Giveaway. All you have to do is leave your skincare question below in the comment section to be entered.

GLOWING WITH MRS. STAFFORD, March 2020

Mrs. Stafford with glowy skin

GLOWING WITH MRS. STAFFORD ADVICE COLUMN:

Glowing with Mrs. Stafford is back! Typically, we start this forum answering one of your beauty questions. After our hiatus, instead, I will be giving some helpful skincare tips to get you through the last bit of this cold weather.

This year already seems to be flying by just as fast as last year. Here we are already in March, which means we have been dealing with endless months of winter. Here in Vermont, March can be the meanest time of year.  The temps are brutal, the snow just keeps on dumping, and when the sun does finally make an appearance for just a few minutes a day, you feel very lucky.

By this point in the winter, I feel like a prune. My face is red, dry and just plain yucky. Winter skin on your arms and legs is extremely dry and itchy. Between the heat in the house and the cold temps outside, it seems like no matter what you do you just can’t get hydrated enough. But like the wonderful Robin Williams says in that classic movie Mrs. Doubtfire, “Help is on the way, Dearie!!”
There are a few things you can do to help combat dry skin, that have nothing to do with putting a product on your face:
1. First, make sure you are drinking plenty of water.
I know, I know, everyone says that. But it’s true. We may think we drink enough water, but most times we don't. I know this is one thing I forget to do.

Try drinking at least 60 ounces of water per day. Filling a water bottle and keeping it with you throughout the day will remind you of how much you drink. This is one of the most common problems many of us deal with, and a big reason why our skin can look so dehydrated. H2O will plump up our skin naturally - think of your skin like a plant, it needs water or it can shrivel up!

Add cucumbers, strawberries, oranges or lemons, which will make drinking water less boring.

2. Alcohol, caffeine, and sugar will also dehydrate you!
Especially during the holiday months, I’m sure many of us over-do it on all of these things. A glass or three of red wine sounds delightful when you’re freezing in the winter months, right? But after all the fun and games are over, remember to get back to a healthier lifestyle.

Moderation is key to everything in life!

3. Another thing that can cause our skin to react is stress.
In our daily lives, it is impossible at times to avoid stress, especially in today’s world. There are certain things we can do to help, though.
  • Turn off your computer or phone at some point during the day.
  • Try meditation.
  • Read a book.
  • Exercise is always a great way to relieve stress.
  • Taking a walk in nature or just down the street is another way to just chill.
  • Try to take some time for yourself and just breathe.

4. Finally, a good night's sleep is something that we all need but tend to lack.
I have found that all the women I talk to - friends, my daughters, and family - all deal with interrupted sleep. Do you wake up at 3:00 am almost every night and stare at the ceiling? I know I do, and I hear the same thing from so many women.

We’re going to dive into this subject in-depth on the blog, but it is one of the things that can cause your skin to react, along with making you just feel tired and cranky.
  • One thing you can do to get a good night’s sleep is not drinking alcohol at least 2 hours before bed. It may help you fall asleep, but it will certainly affect you getting a good night’s rest.
  • No screen time in bed! This means TV, computer, phone or anything that is going to make your brain stimulated.
  • I take melatonin in the evening, which seems to help me.
  • Also, a nice bath and a hot cup of Sleepy Time Tea work for me too. Getting into bed with comfy PJ’s, clean sheets, and some quiet time, as I like to call it, can relax you and get you ready for a restful sleep.
"OK, now on to the products that we can use to help with dry winter skin."
We all know about moisturizing your skin. One thing I think we forget about, especially in the winter, is to exfoliate your skin. If we keep putting products on our skin, but it’s not being absorbed, we are just wasting that product.

Have you ever applied a cream to your face and you feel it is just pilling off? That’s because you need to exfoliate and get rid of those dead skin cells first, to be able to absorb all the benefits of your skincare routine.
One of my favorite ways to exfoliate is by doing a peel. Now, years ago this would entail maybe a trip to a dermatologist. But in today’s world, we have access to so many at-home skin peels. This is one way to get rid of dry, dead skin on your face and get that healthy, hydrated glow that we are all looking for.
I have two favorite at-home facial peels that I have been using this winter. One is new to my regime and the other is a tried and true product that I have used for years. Both contain forms of acid. I know you’re probably thinking, “What, are you crazy, woman?! Acid on my face??” But these are not harmful acids. Skincare acids help exfoliate the dead skin cells allowing your skin to be fresh and new. Make sense?

I have stated many times that I have extremely sensitive skin. These two products work very well on my skin, but when trying anything new please test it out first by doing a patch test on the inside of your arm. If you experience irritation, discontinue use.

I only use peels in the evening after cleansing my face. I also apply moisturizer about 15 minutes after applying the peel. This allows the product to absorb into the skin.

So here are my two favorite peels for the winter months:

1. Dr. Dennis Gross Alpha Beta Universal Daily Peel 30 + 5 Bonus Treatments $88.00

How to use and ingredients for the Universal Daily Peel that I use:

(Average Cost Per Peel: $2.93)

2. goop Beauty GoopGlow 15% Glycolic Overnight Glow Peel - 12 Treatments $125.00

GOOPGLOW 15% GLYCOLIC ACID OVERNIGHT GLOW PEEL
GOOPGLOW 15% GLYCOLIC ACID OVERNIGHT GLOW PEEL
I am new to the goop Beauty line products. I just started using them this winter. Since my skin has been acting up, I wanted to try something new and heard great things about the brand. This is the Gwyneth Paltrow brand that is relatively new to the beauty world. I have tried her exfoliating scrub, which I like very much, so I thought I would try the peel pads.

These are more of an intensive peel and are to be used only once a week and in the evening, at the most. I would not suggest these for first-time users of at-home peels. You get 12 pads in the box so that will give you at least a 3 month supply.

This peel contains a powerful level of 15% Glycolic Acid, which if you have ultra-sensitive skin, is not right for you. The positive side of this ingredient is that it can reach deeper into your skin, and is the most popular ingredient in many peels because it is so powerful in promoting cell turnover. This product also contains Hyaluronic Acid, which as you know, I love in skincare because it naturally holds in moisture to the skin.

I use this in the evening. The pad has a dual texture, so use the smoother side on your face and the more textured side on your neck, shoulders, and chest. Again, there is a good deal of product on this pad, so at the end don’t forget the back of your hands.

I will wait 15 minutes for the product to absorb and then apply my moisturizer. I use just a simple moisturizer, like La Mer or First Aid Beauty when using any chemical peel at home. You do not want to apply any product that has additional acid ingredients. Using a face oil after a peel is an option too.

(Average cost per peel: $10.42)

Last but not least, if you are using a peel, please remember you are creating new, beautiful skin. That means that you must use sunscreen since that new skin is much more likely to be damaged by the sun. Even if you do not use these products, you should be protecting your skin from the sun. Not just for the beauty benefits, but for your overall health benefits, too.
For the rest of your body, try dry brushing.
The only thing this entails is brushing your skin, shoulders to toes, with a dry brush before you shower. There are so many benefits of dry brushing. Here are a few:
  • Exfoliates dry winter skin
  • Helps unclog pores
  • Helps with circulation
  • Helps to feel invigorated in these long winter months

Here are two options for a dry brush:
  1. Sephora Collection Dry Revive: Dry Body Brush $14
  2. goop Beauty G.TOX ULTIMATE DRY BRUSH $20

Getting into the shower right after dry brushing allows you to rinse off those flaky, dead skin cells. Remember not to use super hot water in the shower as that dries the skin very quickly. I know it sounds great when you’re so cold to take a nice, hot shower, but that’s a no-no.

I also like to use a good body oil at the end of the shower. My favorite one for years, and one I have recommended in the past, is the Neutrogena Body Oil. It not only absorbs beautifully into the skin without leaving you feeling oily, but the price is incredible, too.

Okay, that’s it. I hope you found this helpful! Remember to stay hydrated, watch your diet, exfoliate and know that Spring is coming. Just not soon enough!

HOW TO PARTICIPATE IN GLOWING WITH MRS. STAFFORD COLUMN:

Ask your questions in the comment section below for a chance to be featured in next month’s Glowing with Mrs. Stafford column. I will answer one question in detail each month and make sure to do all my research  to  give the most informed answer I can provide!

I even made a video of myself getting Botox injected which you can find on my Youtube channel. I have written some blog posts about the beauty products I use and routines based on the season or specific skin problems.

Glowing with Mrs. Stafford is my take on an advice column based around skincare. Each person has unique skin and their own issues they would like answers to. Glowing with Mrs. Stafford is my idea of how to share my knowledge on this topic.

Basically, this is a place where all of you can ask questions about you’re personal skin issues. Ask me about certain beauty products you might want to try, or even about treatments such as lasers or Botox since I’ve done it all!

All and any questions are welcome (concerning these topics).

March 2020 Giveaway - Tata Harper RESURFACING MASK

Mrs. Stafford with the Tata Harper Resurfacing Mask BHA + ENZYME BRIGHTENING MASK
Mrs. Stafford with the Tata Harper Resurfacing Mask BHA + ENZYME BRIGHTENING MASK
In January I wrote a Tata Harper review on two of their newest products they had just launched and sent me to try out. Tata Harper is a Vermont luxury skincare company that produces 100% natural products, which is skincare at it’s finest!

After I posted my review, I read and heard many of you commenting that this brand was out of your price range. I know that a lot of people live on a budget and cannot splurge on expensive skincare, which is why I picked the Tata Harper Resurfacing Mask as the March Glowing with Mrs. Stafford Giveaway. I also purchased a limited edition size of 3.55 Fl. Oz. which is a lot of product. Keep in mind that with Tata Harper products a little goes a long way, so this tub should last a very long time!

I use a number of Tata Harper skincare products and I can confidently say that these are game changer products. Tata Harper believes that more matters. What that means is they pack the most ingredients at the highest levels of concentration to deliver maximum results. All of this is without a drop of artificial chemicals. Simply put, no fillers.

What's special about the resurfacing mask is that it is a BHA + Enzyme Brightening Mask. This is what Tata Harper has to say about this mask on their website:
"This is your instant glow treatment mask. Our best selling mask instantly transforms a dull complexion into glowing, healthy-looking skin with BHA from white willow bark and pomegranate enzymes. This concentrated formula includes 3 sources of glow, 4 sources to refine pores, and 6 sources to smooth and soften skin texture." - Tata Harper
How to use it:
  • Apply a thick layer over face and neck.
  • Leave on for 20 minutes.
  • Rinse with warm water.
  • It can be used up to 3 times a week.

Basically, I couldn't have said it better myself. For even more helpful tips on how to best use this mask check out their blog post: TATA'S TIPS: 7 WAYS TO GET THE MOST OUT OF OUR RESURFACING MASK

Their products can be found in your local Sephora and in some Neiman Marcus department stores, and of course on the Tata Harper Website. These are investment products for sure. The price reflects that. These are items for those who are looking for the most results from their skincare products.

Glowing with Mrs. Stafford Advice Column:

Q:
"Mrs. Stafford, could you please suggest what Fillers are best for me. I'm 78 years old and I have some lines and wrinkles from sun exposure. Creams do not work except to moisturize. I love your skin."  ~ Willa White

A:
Hi Willa,

Thank you so much for the compliment on my skin! I definitely do a lot of work taking care of it and skincare has kind of become a hobby for me:)

It is true that at some point creams and serums only deal with the surface skin. At some point in time, creams really won't do the job and that's when you need to get out the big guns. Some women are still opposed to getting injections because they don't want to look unnatural but with the right doctor, this won't happen.

Products such as Botox and Dysport help with lines and wrinkles. These are brand names for the injectables that are used to primarily freeze the muscles and prevent them from moving. This will minimize the lines and wrinkles caused by aging. I do get Botox around my eyes (crowfeet) and on my forehead. Also in between my eyebrows right above the nose, this is what is referred to as the "11 lines". I have been doing this for quite a number of years now. I am very happy with the results, and as my Doctor notes, a little goes a long way. What we strive to do is a natural look, so yes, I still have a few wrinkles around my eyes, which is normal. I don't want to look plastic! This product will last for about 3 to 4 months.

Another treatment I receive is fillers. These products bring back the volume and fullness to your face. My Doctor places filler in my cheek area and the lines called "Marionette lines" which are right above the mouth on either side. Filler last longer than Botox or Dysport, normally between 6 to 9 months. Again, for this, you will need an experienced doctor to know where exactly to place the filler. It's all about the muscles and knowing the general anatomy of the face. My doctor is really the only person I would trust with this.

I have a video that I'll attach which will give you so much more information. I filmed this with my doctor, Katherine Lane, to answer all the questions women normally have concerning this issue. You can also see me actually getting injections in the second half of the video.

If you are unsure of going directly for the Botox I understand! If you are uncomfortable or wary of getting a substance injected into your skin (even though Botox, when done by a proper physician is completely safe) there are other solutions as well. One other procedure I had done at a medical spa that really helps with wrinkles is called the CO2RE laser. This can treat multiple skin problems including wrinkles, scars, and sun damage. It resurfaces the skin at superficial and deep levels. The downtime is about 7 days and you should stay out of the sun during this time.

I will say that Botox and Fillers have really made a difference with how my skin looks, but don't expect Botox to be the cure-all. Obviously, you still have to be mindful and take care of your skin in other ways such as having a daily regime and not baking in the sun. If you have sun-damage already such as dark spots, I wrote a great answer for that in my August Column of Glowing with Mrs. Stafford. There are various things you can do such as face peels or lasers.

Finally, I must stress again it is to know your doctor. Word of mouth is really the best way to find someone who will be right for you. I would not go to someone just because you saw a commercial or an ad. Ask for referrals and also a consultation before doing anything.  This is a standard procedure for any qualified doctor to do for you. Ask your friends if they are seeing someone that works for them. You'll be surprised how many people nowadays, men and women, who are getting injectables.

So I hope this is helpful for you and please keep me posted on your search!

October Giveaway - Shani Darden Texture Reform Serum

Shani Darden Texture Reform Serum
Shani Darden Texture Reform Serum
We’re also running a giveaway to celebrate our monthly Glowing with Mrs. Stafford Advice column. I will pick one beauty product and one winner at the end of each month. All of the products will be bought with my own money, and products I have personally used and loved.

This month the giveaway is the Shani Darden Texture Reform Serum.

Shani Darden is the guru for many of the beautiful faces in Hollywood. She started her skincare line in 2013 and her products have become cult classics.

I've used the Texture Reform for about 4 years and love it for it's gentle yet effective results for my sensitive skin. This is great for all skin types. With a mild retinoid along with Lactic Acid, it will exfoliate and improve skin texture. The Aloe Vera helps with redness to calm the skin. Don't forget the sunscreen when using retinoid products!

Here are some of the benefits:

  • Helps boost cellular turnover to give you brighter skin
  • Helps soften the look of fine lines
  • Helps reduce the look of sun damage and dark spots (this is one that so many of you ask about!)
  • Aids in decongesting the skin (helps with those nasty breakouts)

Start slow 1 - 2 nights a week and build up to what your skin can tolerate. Put on to clean skin, let soak in then add a light moisturizer.

*Note: When I’m recommending any skincare item I will always test the product for at least 30 days, most times longer. I feel you need to see how the product works over time, the benefits and results, which in most cases does not happen with just one use.

Price Point - $95.00 1OZ.

The giveaway will take place on my Instagram, see below to learn how to enter.

Glowing with Mrs. Stafford Advice Column:

Q:
"I am 48 going through perimenopause and my skin is horrible. I get these really dry eruptions on my face that break out and look bad. Help!" ~ Jen

A:

OK, hold on Jen, I've got you covered! I went through exactly what you are going through right now. I know it can be very frustrating but there is a light at the end of the tunnel:)

First of all, your skin is reacting to hormonal issues, which you probably already know. We women are so lucky, it never seems to end does it!? But I digress, the key here is to start slow with a light skincare regimen and try to get your skin to a healthy, happy place again. Using products that are kind to your skin will help. By this, I mean nothing abrasive. No scrubs or treatments that will dry out your skin even more. You need to calm your skin with GENTLE products.

1. To start, one of my first posts I did on my blog was specifically for a simple Acne Treatment which I'm attaching here to help clear up those breakouts. It’s a quick six-step process in which all of the products are great for helping calm the skin. Most people tend to over-treat their breakouts. Either they use too many products at once not allowing time for any of them to work, or they overuse a harsh product that irritates the skin even more. I know it can be tempting to do these things since breakouts are no fun, but my advice is to take a step back and take a deep breath. If you stick to a simple regimen like the one above, with products that are gentle enough, while also treating problem areas, then you should start to see results.

If all of these are new products for you though make sure to use one product at a time, to test out how your skin reacts to each. This way if you do have a reaction you can pinpoint the product and take that out of your regimen. I do this with all the new products I try because I have extremely sensitive skin. I have a feeling this won’t happen with any of these products, but it’s always better to be safe than sorry. Everyone’s skin is unique and something that is fine for me might not work with you. But again all these products are extremely well made, highly reviewed, and meant to calm the skin.

2. To address your second issue of extremely dry skin I wrote a blog listing my Top 5 Favorite Moisturizers, linked here. All of these all miracle workers and should do the job! Once you get your breakouts under control it’s essential to find a great moisturizer to keep your skin glowing and hydrated! A lot of women, especially younger women, don’t understand the importance of moisturizing your skin every day. If your skin is prone to acne then your most likely using spot treatments, which is a step in the Acne Regime I linked above. It’s important to balance that out with a good moisturizer so you're not dealing with dry skin that inflames your problem areas even more.

3. Once your skin is healthy and feeling back to normal you can move on to the next step in skincare. There are so many products that are available over the counter and things can become very confusing. So many different ingredients and what do they all mean!

Well, one ingredient that I feel is a must in my skin regimen is Alpha Hydroxy Acids (AHAs). As your skin ages, it is necessary to start using products that contain (AHA). Products such as Drunk Elephant’s T.L.C. Sukari Babyfacial Mask (with 25% AHA + 2% BHA) or First Aid Beauty’s Facial Radiance Pads have the ingredient AHA. These products gently exfoliate the skin and will leave you with radiant looking skin. Glycolic Acid, which is a form of AHA, will improve discoloration and enlarged pores. Lactic Acid, another form of AHA, which is a very gentle AHA and is great for sensitive skin.

I know that got a little scientific but believe me I did my research. If you’re still confused just comment and I will try to clarify.

4. Finally, add a Vitamin C product to your routine. It works wonders! This month we are including the Glow Recipe's Pineapple-C Brightening Serum for the Glowing with Mrs. Stafford Giveaway. I love this product for brightening the skin and delivering antioxidants to protect the skin.

In Short:
1. So start slow and easy.

2. Be consistent in your routine.

3. Add in one new product at a time, such as a Retinol, Vitamin C, or AHA.

I hope this helps. Jen, keep me posted on your progress and remember we're all in this together!

We’re also running a giveaway to celebrate our monthly Glowing with Mrs. Stafford Advice column. I will pick one beauty product and one winner at the end of each month. All of the products will be bought with my own money, and products I have personally used and loved.

This month the giveaway is the Glow Recipe's Pineapple-C Brightening Serum.

This month's selection for our giveaway is a relatively new product for me from Glow Recipe's line. I have been using the Pineapple-C Brightening Serum for over 4 months now and love the results I see. I always have a Vitamin C product in my routine and this one, in particular, is excellent for sensitive skin.

Vitamin C is a key ingredient to achieve glowing skin. It is made to brighten and tighten your skin's appearance while also providing your skin with antioxidants. The pineapple juice helps create bright, smooth skin while the Chamomile calms the skin making it perfect for those of us with sensitive skin. If you follow my blog you know I love any product with Hyaluronic Acid. This ingredient is the gold standard for hydration and it will visibly plump the skin for that healthy, hydrated look we are going for. Also, a bonus is that the packaging is way too adorable!

*Note: When I’m recommending any skincare item I will always test the product for at least 30 days, most times longer. I feel you need to see how the product works over time, the benefits and results, which in most cases does not happen with just one use.

Q:
"Hello Mrs. Stafford,
I am currently 60 years old. My skincare question is “how should I take care of hyperpigmentation or dark spots from sun damage? I don’t like wearing too much makeup, so being able to clear up this issue will help me with that. I love your pretty face and how young you look. Hopefully, you can give me advice on what would be best for my skin. Thanks a lot!" ~ Shirley Navarro

Hi Shirley! Thanks for the great question! I know that so many women can relate to this particular issue.

There are 3 different ways you can deal with dark spots or what is called hyperpigmentation. This is a natural result of your skin being exposed to the sun.

1. The first step I would take would be to purchase over the counter products.
  • There are so many options on the market today that contain retinol, which is a key ingredient in helping sun-damaged skin.
  • When looking for a retinol product, start with a lower percentage, 1% being a good starting point.
  • Use only in the evening, beginning with twice a week.
  • See how your skin reacts over a few weeks. If all goes well you can increase to three times per week.
  • A product that I have used and found incredibly effective is Drunk Elephant A-Passioni Retinol Cream.
  • A little goes a long way with retinol and this product is no exception. Use only a pea size for your face. It is a bit expensive but since you use only a very small amount it will last for quite some time.

Not only have I used this but my husband has also. He’s been using it for over 4 months now and very dark spots he had on the side of his face have faded and mostly disappeared. The extra benefits of retinol are that it helps with fine lines and wrinkles.

2. If you feel that this is not working for you another option is to speak with your doctor or go to see a dermatologist.
  • Talk with your doctor and try a prescription-strength retinol cream.
  • Just be aware that when using any of these creams it’s a must that you wear sunscreen on your face at all times, even with over the counter products.
  • Since you are trying to rid yourself of damaged skin, your skin cells will be turning over at a faster rate, thus exfoliating itself. That beautiful new skin will burn much faster if exposed to the sun, so don’t forget the sunscreen!

3. Your final option would be medical lasers.
  • If all else fails this is a way to go but there are downsides to lasers that you should be aware of.
  • First, treatments can be quite expensive.
  • There can also be discomfort and some major downtime associated with lasers. But they do work!
  • Look for a medical spa in your area to see what is offered. Make sure that they have good recommendations before making an appointment. Usually, they will have a website that you can check out to see reviews.
  • Also, ask friends that have had laser treatments done. Do your homework to make sure that the person you choose is qualified and knows what they are doing.

I’ve had Fraxel laser done and while it took at least a week for my skin to heal and it was uncomfortable the results were incredible. No pain no gain as they say!

Hope this helps and let me know how you make out!

Since I started this blog I have received many compliments and questions on my skincare routine. Women have asked, “what is my secret” and honestly it’s a combination of multiple things. I use many different products, and tend to switch up my routine often. Staying out of the sun, and wearing sunscreen is a huge one. Finally, I have not been shy about the fact that I get Botox and filler. I even made a video of myself getting Botox injected which you can find on my Youtube channel. I have written some blog posts about the beauty products I use and routines based on the season or specific skin problems.

Glowing with Mrs. Stafford is my take on an advice column based around skincare. Each person has unique skin and their own issues they would like answered.

August Giveaway - Bioderma Hydrabio Serum

Bioderma Hydrabio Serum
We’re also running a giveaway to celebrate our monthly Glowing with Mrs. Stafford Advice column. I will pick one beauty product and one winner at the end of each month. All of the products will be bought with my own money, and products I have personally used and loved.

This month the giveaway is the BIODERMA Hydrabio Serum.

Bioderma’s Hydrabio Serum is for extremely dehydrated skin. This product was a lifesaver at the time I started using it! It just so happened that at the beginning of May, I underwent an unexpected surgery, which I will write about in a future post. I don’t know about you, but when I am under stress it shows directly through my skin. Therefore, my face became incredibly red and my skin began to peel. I think between stress and probably the effects of anesthesia and recovery, my skin was reacting to all of this. Honestly, my skin hadn’t been that damaged since I went through menopause.

So I started using the Hydrabio Serum, in the evening before going to bed. In just a few days the redness was gone and my skin began to heal. Needless to say, I was amazed because I had never had a product work so quickly before, and I’ve used a considerable range of products over the years. I began by using the serum every morning and night. Within a week my skin was back to normal! I didn’t have any adverse reactions and that’s saying something since my skin is very sensitive to new products. Going forward the Hydrabio Serum will be a staple in my skincare routine!

*Note: When I’m recommending any skincare item I will always test the product for at least 30 days, most times longer. I feel you need to see how the product works over time, the benefits and results, which in most cases does not happen with just one use.

Price Point - $26.90 1.33 OZ.

The giveaway will take place on social media, see below to learn how to enter.

Welcome to the Mrs. Stafford Community where no topic is off limits! I want this blog to be a forum for women my age to be able to discuss everything beauty and fashion, as well as the more sensitive subjects such as menopause and healthy aging. I’m starting my sixties and I feel the best I have in years, and I want to help other women feel the same way. As a community, I think we can come together and start the conversation. This is all about women supporting other women, and trying to have some fun in the meantime.
